Four Suspects Remanded in Custody Over Killing of Dilan Polat’s Bodyguard
Four suspects detained in connection with the fatal shooting of Can Polat — the close bodyguard of social media personality Dilan Polat and a cousin of her husband Engin Polat — have been remanded in custody after being brought before the court. Can Polat was killed in an armed attack on Wednesday 3 June in Alaçatı, a holiday area near the Çeşme district of İzmir. After investigators identified a connection to İstanbul, the case file was transferred from the Çeşme Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office to its İstanbul counterpart, and operations carried out in İstanbul led to the capture of two further suspects accused of acting alongside the gunman and supplying the weapon. Following the completion of their processing, all four suspects were referred to the courthouse and subsequently placed under arrest.
Former Constitutional Court President Haşim Kılıç on Absolute Nullity Ruling: “The Party Should Have Simply Been Dissolved”
Former Constitutional Court President Haşim Kılıç has warned that the absolute nullity ruling against the CHP is a graver decision than an outright party closure, declaring that “no political party is safe any longer.” Speaking at the “Justice Right Now” conference organised by the Democracy Platform in Fatih, İstanbul, Kılıç argued that the Supreme Electoral Council’s authority had been usurped, and cautioned that if the Court of Cassation upholds the ruling, far more serious disputes and problems will follow. He stated that the decision had inflicted grave damage on democracy, that all parties could henceforth be rendered ineffective by a ruling from a civil court of first instance, and that the Supreme Electoral Council ought to have stood its ground and defended its jurisdiction.
Armed Attack on Koç Holding’s Otokoç Dealership in Antalya Follows Similar Incident in İstanbul
A masked and hatted gunman opened fire on an Otokoç car dealership — owned by the Koç Holding group — in the Altınova neighbourhood of Kepez district, Antalya, at around 3:30 in the afternoon, before fleeing the scene. The shots struck the building, causing damage to the premises, though no casualties were reported. Employees who heard the gunfire came outside, and emergency services along with police units were dispatched to the address following a call to the 112 Emergency Centre. Officers secured the surrounding area, and crime scene investigation teams recovered three bullet casings from the site. Police have launched an operation to apprehend the suspect, working from descriptions provided by eyewitnesses.
Instagram Account of Social Media Influencer Mükremin Gezgin Blocked
The official Instagram account of social media influencer Mükremin Gezgin has been restricted following a decision by the authorities, adding to a growing pattern of social media sanctions against public figures facing legal proceedings in Turkey. Gezgin, who was arrested as part of a drugs investigation, had been released just two days prior to the access block being imposed. The move comes shortly after a similar restriction was placed on the account of Dilan Polat, who counts approximately six million followers on the platform. The blocking of Gezgin’s account marks yet another instance of judicial action extending to the social media presence of influencers caught up in criminal proceedings.

Erdoğan: Climate Change is as Serious a Threat as War
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan used the gala dinner of the Zero Waste Forum at İstanbul’s Atatürk Airport to deliver a wide-ranging address on the climate crisis, declaring that the issue poses as grave a threat to humanity as war or a global pandemic. He argued that the challenge ought to be framed as a “climate crisis” rather than merely “climate change,” contending that naming the problem accurately leads to more rational solutions. Erdoğan highlighted the cascading consequences of industrial-era pollution, wasteful consumption habits and the destructive effects of modernity, whilst drawing attention to the stark global inequality at the heart of the crisis — noting that the countries most responsible for deepening it are often the least affected by it. Citing a United Nations World Food Programme report, he warned that 43 million children around the world are currently living with hunger, that one third of all food produced annually is wasted, and that more than three million children die each year from hunger-related illnesses. On waste, he referenced the so-called “garbage continent” — a mass of plastic waste covering 1.6 million square kilometres in the North Pacific — and cautioned that global solid waste volumes could rise from 2.1 billion tonnes in 2023 to 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050 without urgent intervention. Turning to Turkey’s own record, Erdoğan stated that the Zero Waste Movement, launched in 2017 under the leadership of his wife Emine Erdoğan, has recovered 90 million tonnes of waste, prevented the felling of 613 million trees, and contributed 365 billion lira to the national economy, with the country’s recycling rate having risen from 13 per cent in 2017 to 37.53 per cent in 2025. He pledged to raise that figure to 60 per cent by 2035 and 70 per cent by 2053, in line with Turkey’s net-zero emissions target for that year.
Electoral Authority Chief Declares Local By-Elections Completed Without Incident
Serdar Mutta, President of the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK), has announced that today’s municipal mayor, municipal council and local authority by-elections were carried out without issue across Turkey. In a written statement, Mutta confirmed that voting took place across 1,164 ballot boxes, with 371,870 registered voters casting their ballots in by-elections held in several townships — including Yolüstü, Çevrecik and Bağtaşı in Tokat province, Kuşçu in Yeşilyurt, Tekke in Gümüşhane, and Mustafapaşa in Nevşehir’s Ürgüp district — as well as headman elections in 355 neighbourhoods and village council elections in 37 neighbourhoods nationwide. Voting concluded at 5:00 in the afternoon, after which ballot box committees began the counting and tallying process in accordance with the relevant legislation. Mutta noted that once counting is complete, results sheets will be signed by committee members and the data fed into the electoral information system, and extended his thanks to citizens who participated in the democratic process, election officials, ballot box committee members and all public servants involved in the conduct of the vote.
AKP Wins Four of Six Township Contests in Local By-Elections; CHP Alleges Voter Importation
Unofficial results from municipal mayoral by-elections held across six townships in Tokat, Gümüşhane and Nevşehir provinces show that the ruling AKP secured four seats, with the MHP and CHP each taking one. In Tokat province, AKP candidates won in Bağtaşı, Kuşçu — where the MHP in fact prevailed — Yolüstü and Tekke in Gümüşhane, whilst the AKP’s Mustafa Özer claimed victory in Mustafapaşa in Nevşehir’s Ürgüp district. The sole opposition win came in Çevrecik, where CHP candidate Nazım Demirkol received the most votes. A total of 27 political parties contested the elections, which also included neighbourhood headman votes in 362 locations across the country. AKP spokesman Ömer Çelik hailed the results on social media, saying the outcome demonstrated that the People’s Alliance continues to enjoy the strong approval of the nation. However, CHP Deputy Chairman for Local Governance Gökan Zeybek raised serious allegations of voter manipulation, citing population data showing that the combined registered electorate across the six townships surged from 4,275 at the 2024 local elections to 10,791 by 6 May 2026 — an increase of 6,516 voters in just two years. Zeybek alleged that voters had been transferred from other townships via population registry offices, that district governors had acted as political actors rather than impartial state representatives, and that electoral boards had dismissed formal objections. He stated that the CHP was placing these events on the record and leaving the matter to the judgement of the public conscience.
Culture Minister Pays Tribute to Poets Cahit Zarifoğlu and Abdurrahim Karakoç
Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy has commemorated two late figures of Turkish literature, Cahit Zarifoğlu and Abdurrahim Karakoç, in a social media post marking the anniversaries of their deaths. Ersoy described Zarifoğlu as a poet, storyteller and thinker who created a refined literary world that spoke beyond his own era, whilst characterising Karakoç as a poet who gave enduring voice to the spirit of Anatolia, capturing his people’s joys, grievances and love of homeland in memorable verse. The minister said both writers had breathed life into language and given literature a sense of direction, and expressed his wish that their souls rest in peace.

Foreign Minister Fidan Holds Telephone Talks with Iranian Counterpart Araghchi Amid Escalating Regional Tensions
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has spoken by telephone with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi as diplomatic contacts intensified following a sharp escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran. According to sources at the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the two ministers discussed the latest developments in the region and the current state of ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States. The call came after the Israeli military carried out an airstrike on the Dahiye district of Beirut despite a ceasefire being in place, prompting Iranian officials to announce that they would retaliate. The Iranian military subsequently declared that Israel’s Ramat David Air Base — described as the centre of Israeli operations against Lebanon — had been struck with ballistic missiles.
Former AKP Official Claims Party Harbours Faction Working to Engineer Erdoğan’s Defeat
Metin Külünk, a former member of the AKP’s Central Executive Committee, has made striking allegations that a covert network operating within the ruling party is actively laying the groundwork for President Erdoğan’s electoral defeat. Speaking to journalist Cansu Çamlıbel of T24, Külünk claimed that a faction he characterised as being fed by a “London-Tel Aviv axis” has been working since 2024 to bring about what he described as an Erdoğan rout at the ballot box. He further alleged that following the absolute nullity ruling against the CHP, this same network has been interfering with or contacting relevant institutions in order to hand the party over to Özgür Özel. Külünk argued that the İmamoğlu project — a reference to imprisoned Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu — has significant backing within AKP ranks, and that a faction inside the party has been making serious preparations, without Erdoğan’s knowledge, to clear the path for İmamoğlu’s political project to succeed. He described the strategic aim of this axis as the advancement of a so-called Greater Israel project and the opening of a new era he termed “Pax Judaica,” driven by artificial intelligence, with the broader geopolitical goal of reshaping the region beyond the boundaries established by the Sykes-Picot agreement through the creation of ethnic and sectarian ministates. Külünk added that elements of the business community are also involved in this network.
AKP-Run Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality Puts Ten Villa Plots Up for Sale at 24 Million Lira
Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality, governed by the AKP, is selling off ten villa-grade land plots in the Güneşli neighbourhood of the Kocasinan district, with a combined reserve price of 24 million lira. The plots, ranging in size from approximately 695 to 748 square metres, are to be auctioned individually on 16 June under open tender procedures in accordance with Article 45 of State Tender Law No. 2886, with individual reserve prices set between 2.3 and 2.5 million lira. Whilst the tender announcement describes the properties as residential land, auction records characterise them specifically as villa plots, with building conditions permitting only detached, two-storey construction — confirming their suitability for low-density, villa-type housing development. Each parcel carries a tender specification fee of 7,500 lira and is exempt from VAT. The sale has drawn attention amid a broader and ongoing debate over the practice of AKP-run and other municipal authorities disposing of publicly owned assets to meet budget and financing needs, with critics arguing that whilst such sales may address short-term funding pressures, they raise serious questions about the long-term future of cities’ shared public assets.

307 Former Parliamentarians Demand Emergency CHP Congress in Defiance of Absolute Nullity Ruling
A total of 307 former CHP parliamentarians have now signed a joint declaration calling for an immediate extraordinary party congress, as internal opposition to the Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu leadership’s resistance to holding such a gathering continues to grow. The latest wave of signatories — 84 former MPs and senators including ex-ministers, former ambassadors and senior party figures such as Şükrü Elekdağ, Mehmet Haberal, Fikri Sağlar, Arif Sağ, Faruk Loğoğlu and Seyfi Oktay — joined a declaration condemning the Ankara Regional Court of Justice’s absolute nullity ruling against the party’s 38th Ordinary Congress as an unacceptable interference with the rule of law, democratic politics and the will of the nation. The signatories argued that internal party election processes are conducted under the supervision of electoral boards and the Supreme Electoral Council in accordance with Article 79 of the Constitution, and that YSK rulings are final and cannot be appealed, rendering the civil court’s intervention constitutionally illegitimate. The declaration stated that using the judiciary as an instrument to regulate political life is deeply harmful to democratic order and has inflicted grave damage on public trust in political institutions and the justice system. The former parliamentarians concluded that holding an immediate extraordinary congress is the only correct, legitimate and lawful path to resolving the crisis before internal divisions deepen further, and affirmed that the CHP is not without its defenders, pledging to continue standing by the party, Turkey’s democratic heritage and the values of the Republic.
