🔫 Six Remanded Over İzmit Bar Attack That Killed Three, as Investigators Trawl 1,844 Hours of Footage
Six suspects have been remanded in custody following simultaneous raids on 22 addresses in Istanbul and Sakarya over the drive-by shooting at The Castle Irish Pub in İzmit on 27 March, which killed bar owner Volkan Berberoğlu, Kocaelispor congress member and Shell Turkey investment director Cem Özer, and retired police officer Talip Çakır, and wounded two others. Investigators reviewed 1,844 hours of security and city surveillance camera footage to establish that the suspects, who used a stolen vehicle with cloned number plates, travelled from Istanbul and Sakarya and operated in coordination with a second vehicle. Of the nine people initially detained, six were remanded, two released under foreign travel bans, and one placed under house arrest. A further four suspects were detained in subsequent raids and remain in police custody.

📞 Iran Denies Firing Missiles at Turkey, Warns of False Flag Operations and Offers Joint Technical Investigation
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has flatly denied that Iran has fired any missiles at Turkey, calling the claims entirely baseless, and warned of the risk of false flag operations in the region during a phone call with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. Araghchi said Iran respects Turkey’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and offered joint technical cooperation to examine any specific allegations. The Iranian minister also condemned US threats against Iran’s energy and production infrastructure as criminal in themselves and evidence of Washington’s disregard for international law, calling on the international community to respond decisively. The call also covered the broader regional situation and the ongoing US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
⚡ US-Run Geothermal Project Affecting 16 Villages in Earthquake Zone Draws Parliamentary Questions Over Bypassed Environmental Rules
CHP and DEM Party MPs have brought to parliament a geothermal energy project planned for Varto district in Muş province, raising serious questions about procedural irregularities, seismic risk, and the exemption of the project from environmental impact assessment requirements. The project, run by US-based IGNIS H2 Enerji Üretim AŞ, involves drilling ten wells across a 4,037-hectare licence area and will directly affect 16 villages whose residents depend on agriculture and livestock farming. Critics note that Varto sits on active fault lines and suffered devastating earthquakes in the past, and that scientists warn geothermal drilling — particularly high-pressure fluid injection — can trigger seismic activity, contaminate groundwater, and damage farmland. CHP deputy leader Evrim Rızvanoğlu filed detailed written questions to the agriculture and environment ministers challenging whether the pasture land reclassifications were legally valid, whether the project has been artificially split into smaller components to avoid triggering mandatory EIA thresholds, and why a Council of State stay order on the relevant EIA regulation appears not to have been applied. DEM Party’s Kezban Konukçu asked on what scientific basis the “no EIA required” decision was taken for a project of this scale, whether independent seismic risk analysis has been conducted, and why local communities whose livelihoods are directly threatened have been ignored.

🕊️ Kurdish Peace Process to Be Legislated by June With Implementation Starting in July, Sources Say
A legislative timetable for Turkey’s Kurdish peace process has been drawn up and communicated to the relevant parties, with sources indicating that legal measures will be finalised by June and implementation beginning in July, completing within six months or a year at most. The framework reportedly prioritises organisation members with no criminal record, with conditional release for imprisoned members to follow once the state shares data on weapons surrendered — and crucially, no provisions covering Öcalan himself or senior PKK leadership, with sources confirming Öcalan will remain on İmralı island, a position said to be confirmed by the recently completed construction there. The work is being coordinated by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and AKP parliamentary group deputy chairman Abdulhamit Gül. The timeline is said to be driven in part by a possible early election being discussed for autumn 2027, with all groundwork needing to be completed by spring 2027 for results to be visible to voters. Political sources warn that if the process is not completed swiftly and decisively, the government risks the perception of having “alarmed Turks and strung along Kurds.” A gathering in Diyarbakır under the banner of a Kurdish National Platform — where a Kurdish national anthem was sung and demands for Kurdish as an official language were made — is said to be causing irritation in government circles and is being monitored closely as a potential sabotage attempt by groups with possible external backing.

⚖️ İmamoğlu Speaks Out for Man Who Ran His Fan Account and Has Been Held for 250 Days Over a Photoshopped Image
The thirteenth day of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality trial produced a striking moment when İmamoğlu publicly called for the release of Mahir Gün, the administrator of the “Ekrem Edit” social media fan account, who has been in pre-trial detention for 250 days. Gün’s lawyer Gamze Keleş told the court her client created the account with no financial motive, that he is an Alevi and could not reasonably be said to harbour hostility towards Alevis, and that the prosecution had included a photoshopped image in the indictment without verification. She also pointed out that even if convicted, Gün would face a maximum of four months in prison — yet has already been held for eight — and that his wife is in financial difficulty and had to borrow money from the lawyer herself just to visit him. İmamoğlu, who said he had spent three days preparing questions for Gün under the mistaken belief he was a different defendant in a separate espionage case, told the court upon realising the situation: “This now genuinely crosses into cruelty. Do not continue this.” Hearings will resume tomorrow, with release requests for detained defendants whose testimony has not yet been taken to be heard through to Thursday.
⚖️ Interior Ministry Suspends Uşak Mayor Yalım From Office Following Remand in Custody
The Interior Ministry has formally suspended Uşak Mayor Özkan Yalım from office under Article 127 of the Constitution and Article 47 of the Municipal Law, following his remand in custody on charges of running a criminal organisation, bid-rigging, and extortion and bribery by coercion. The suspension is described as a temporary precautionary measure pending the outcome of the investigation.
🗳️ CHP Weighs Mass MP Resignations to Force By-Election as Court Challenges Threaten Party Leadership
Turkey’s main opposition party is navigating a convergence of legal and political pressures that could reshape its leadership. On the judicial front, an appeal court is examining whether CHP’s 38th ordinary congress — at which Özgür Özel defeated Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu — should be declared void on grounds of absolute nullity, with Hürriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi writing that Ankara corridors are buzzing with talk of the appeal court overturning the lower court’s dismissal of the case; if so, Kılıçdaroğlu could be installed as a caretaker trustee over the party, mirroring what happened with Istanbul’s provincial organisation. Özel responded defiantly, accusing Selvi of issuing threats and saying he would not have sought Atatürk’s chair if he intended to be intimidated. Meanwhile Özel has hinted at a bold parliamentary manoeuvre: with eight seats currently vacant and 30 needed under Article 78 of the Constitution to trigger mandatory by-elections, Sözcü reports that 22 CHP MPs resigning would reach that threshold and force a vote within three months. Party insiders are also expressing alarm that the wave of municipal operations could extend to Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş, and that the campaign targets not just local administrations but the party leadership and potential presidential candidates as a whole — with some arguing that the economic damage since 19 March means the government cannot afford another destabilising round and that jailing rivals risks severe political backlash.
