⚖️ ‘There Are Names in This File That Would Rock the Headlines’ — Lawyer Refuses to Reveal Them in Court
The second session of the retrial in the Ayhan Bora Kaplan organised crime case produced a memorable moment when a defence lawyer told the Sincan courthouse that a document in the case file contains names so significant they would dominate the news agenda — but declined to name them, saying the press was present and he was a young lawyer who did not want to get burned. The hearing also heard from defendant Erhan Bakioğlu, who said the alleged kidnapping and torture victim Erkan Doğan was a childhood friend who had pestered him with calls after Kaplan’s arrest, boasting that he had “brought about” the detentions and that officials would pay off his shop debts in return for his cooperation — and who claimed Doğan had asked him to participate in filming a video statement by calling him on video while reading out a prepared text. Bakioğlu said he passed what he knew to journalist Müyesser Yıldız as a tip-off. Lawyer Tarık Teoman, himself on trial, complained that he is the only lawyer in Turkey to have been detained simply for visiting a client in prison, and demanded his travel ban be lifted and his acquittal entered. Kaplan himself closed proceedings by declaring the indictment “full of lies and deceit,” to which the presiding judge responded drily: “Saying that is enough — that counts as a defence.” The hearing was adjourned to 9 April.
